More pictures from the lake, late 1950's

The youngster is me -- I'm sharing because of the sad face. This was after a near-drowning. I couldn't swim. Usually wore a lifejacket but for some reason wasn't that day. I was walking on the rope -- and the center was over my head, I slipped off, and the kind lady saw I was in trouble and pulled me up. - Paula Bush A reader said: The guy who's in the water by the right corner of the raft looks like Donnie Schmollinger.

Cleanup Crew, maybe 1965?

Kathy Boudouris, Cindy Huffman, Paula Bush, Linda Hill and Janet Gum cleaning up in the old girl's dorm.

Guess who lost?

And does anyone know why all they guys have their pants on wrong side out? Bill Barton and Greg Heavner look on while -- who is dousing Frank Bush with confetti? Is that Scott Cain?

Ed Armstrong, Dean, 1959

Ed Armstrong was one of our deans. At the time he was the preacher at the Edwardville church. The boy pointing in the background is Danny Davis.

Jr. High Canteen - 1959

Just right of the right-hand tree is Sandi Heston. I think this is that same '59 Jr. High week that is in the group picture below. That is me by the tree, and to my right is my friend Nancy Spratt (in patterned skirt). She did not come to camp after Jr. High. Karen Morrow is the blond girl.

1959 Faculty Student Ball Game

Tom Ewald is the batter. The man leaning against the backstop is Bill Griffin. Charlie Greer in white t-shirt and glasses, second right of the backstop in the background. The little guy watching the game in glasses and black shirt looks like it could be Danny Clymer.

Don't miss any pictures...

Be sure to look at the archived pictures (see long list on the right). Hundreds to choose from. Click on the pic for a larger view.

A few more from 1967 and Canteen Favorites

I think number 6 is Delmyra Carter.
Deb recalls, "Canteen time! Oh what fun! Over time I was introduced to lots of “different” tastes at those windows. During the brief time that the camp had a soda fountain I remember working in the canteen and making hundreds of Suicides . However, the first different treat I remember was Pepsi and peanuts. Take a bottle of pepsi, drink a little, add some salted peanuts (Watch the foam!) and drink! Probably my first introduction to “sweet & salty” snacks! I could be wrong but I have a vague memory of Pat Heston introducing me to this treat and grape soda! Anyone else have a favorite canteen treat?"
Paula's memory: "It was the older kids who were drinking the Pepsi/peanuts in my memories -- Mike Heston, Danny Williams -- more guys than gals. And they knew just where to put the bottles in the old cooler so that they were just on the verge of freezing, and would turn to ice when you opened them. They always had a couple "stashed". They would come in while I was selling at the window as kitchen help and pull out the special bottles they wanted to buy. And I think it was Coke, not Pepsi, wasn't it?"
Gwen Heavner ....Lynne Gurley & I remember mixing peanuts in Mountain Dew!! I also recall Fudgecicles were a NICKEL!!!!!

Max Whited with three junior girls. Honor camper Cindy Rasler with dean Keith Sproat and Tom Plog (I think!).

Stealing the Bell Clapper - Frank's recollections - 1959 Pics

"In the late 50's (56-59) one of the favorite pranks of campers was to steal the bell clapper. It was very frustrating to deans to ring the morning bell and have nothing happen when he pulled the rope. These pictures were taken in 1959. The first two were in broad daylight. I think one of the two culprits in the top picture was my niece Claudia Price. (Pop Smith is looking on on the right picture.) The picture on the left was taken at night with infrared film. The flash was covered with a filter that stopped all visible light, but emitted infrared light. After they stole the clapper, I had them pose with the prize.Preparing for 1960, we decided we had enough of this prank and had the clapper welded so it could not be removed. One group of campers did wrap it with burlap that muffled the sound. (Dad didn't identify the women holding the clapper. I recognize Debbie Rush's older sister Raye Linda Rush in the scarf and Charlotte Schroeder next to her.)

"Realizing the potential for problems we also opted for caution is another way. When the dam was built, we put in a drain pipe with the thought if we ever wanted to drain the lake, we could just open this valve. I had dreams about waking up some morning and the lake would be gone. So, we also welded the valve so campers couldn't open it."

Jr. Boys week, maybe 1967?

1967 Vespers - Charles Wogman

1954 HS Group Shot

This 1954 High School group was shot by Wilson Wiseman. This was the year that Frank Bush served as Vesper Speaker. Bushes lived in Catlin at the time. Mike was just a baby, Paula 2 years old, and the family spent most of the time at Elams. 1:1 Claudia Price 1:7 Dennis Corley (The last time Frank saw him he was preaching in the Quincy area.) 2:3 Mrs. Elliot 2:4 Dean Elliot (at Herrick at the time). 2:5 Dean Schrumpf, 2:6 Ruth Schrumpf, 2:7 Mrs. Bartlett (she worked for Chr Standard and attended many camps) 2:8 Charley Wogman 2:10 Mark Weaver 2:11 Kay Hutchinson. 3:1 Frank Bush 3:4 Janet Elam 3:5 Doris Corbus, 3:6 Lana Tevis 3:8 Marlyce Elam 3:9 Alice Schroeder 4:3 Don Ray 4:11 Buddy Wisinger 4:12 Elmer McKean, 4:15 Tom McKean, 4:16 Roland Hurbert
From Frank: "Roger Elliot was the preacher at Herrick. He invited me to preach at a men's meeting in the spring of 1955. It was there that the pulpit committee from Greenville interviewed me."

Various weeks, circa 1961

Lynne Gurley remembers...One week there was some kind of contest between the teams. We had to write songs and perform them about faculty members. For some strange reason, I still remember our song, and can still sing it! Our faculty member was Danny Bowling and this picture brings it all back: (To the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean")

"Danny Bowling's a mighty nice fellow.
You can tell by the lift of his chin.
But each time he bends his poor elbow,
Oh boy, how the vittles roll in.
Roll in, roll in,
Oh boy, how the vittles roll in, roll in.
Roll in, roll in,
Oh boy, how the vittles roll in!"

Maybe we will get her to sing it for us and post it for all to hear!

Bill Griffin is in the Jr Boys pic (top left). Dan Bowling and Stu Couve eating watermelon. (top right). Ed Armstrong is the preacher in the Pre Hi (above right) pic. Is that Judy Roodhouse just above Danny Williams, and Kathy Roodhouse across the table at the top? Maybe a First Chance week since there are both boys and girls?

1961 Jr. Girls - meal time

Life Recruit Week 1967 - Field Trips

Frank says, "To make Life Recruit week different we tried several "outings." We visited the Lighthouse Mission in St. Louis; Vandalia Penal Farm, etc. I'm not sure where we went in '67, but here are two pictures of the bus ride." Paula remembers Menard State Prison as the outing this year unless it was '66. On the left, Charlotte Redmon and Carla Sexton in front of the Rostivitt twins and I think Bev Wagoner beside them. On the right Bruce Reeder and John Beck in the foreground. Connie Combes in the very center. I also spotted Janet Zumwalt, third to the right from Connie and partly hidden. From the looks of everyone this is on the way back to camp after a very long day. We also went to St. Louis one time and did some witnessing/singing under the Arch. Everyone looks pretty dressed up, but we wore dresses more often back then than we do now.

1967 Pre-Hi Chow Lines

Is that Donna Ragel trying to get that first line straight?

Candee Barton on the left in the close line, then two in front of her Gail Frasier, then Mark Thomure looking so stylish in his white shirt and tie! In the second line back on the left 2:3 is Joy Carter. Female faculty on the right is Bev Wagoner, and the man beyond line 3 facing us is Jim Taylor. Cindy Rasler (3:13)is in the 3rd line close to the rear.
I think that is Dan Clymer facing away end of row 4 and Gwen thinks that it is John Heston in front of Danny Clymer! . In picture on the right Marilyn, David and Melanie Bush are in the background.
