E. Porter Estes taking a break

Something is funny -- HS week maybe '65 or '66?

Who can identify these campers?

HS Week registration, maybe '64?

Nadine Crane is the lady on the bench on the end registering campers.

Seth Wilson teaching Christian Worker's week mid 60s

Bennett Roodhouse in the front, left. Max Whited front row white shirt.

Ruth Schrumpf teaching juniors

Mrs. Schrumpf had her hands full with juniors. Since there are both boys and girls, maybe First Chance week or family camp? 1964?

Work crew

There was lots of work clearing trees for the chapel, the lake, the class areas. Roger Grubb, youth minister at Greenville, is on the left. The younger helpers are Bruce Nolin, Mike Bush and Gary Hill, all from Greenville.

Trips to prisons

Frank Bush recalls, "I don't remember when the "Trip to prison" was taken. We took a Life Recruit week to visit Vandalia Prison– which is what I thought of when I saw Seth Wilson in this shot. What troubles me is that all the kids are from Greenville. We took the Greenville kids to Manard Prison. If this is that group, why is Seth with us? Mystery." I remember taking a later trip to Manard, Life Recruit week when I was 14. So that would have been 1966. This is of course much earlier.

Judy Kious, Fred McKean, Raye Linda Rush, Merlene Hagler, Ronnie Lamb, Charlotte Schroeder. All from Greenville

The Camp T-shirt

Even before we were campers my brother Mike and I were proud to be seen in the Bond t-shirt. Everyone remembers the bright red sun, right? - Paula

1964 -- Measuring shorts

Some of us remember school dress codes. And yes, at camp, too. Barb Haley is checking but I'm not sure hers would pass. Frank Bush recalls, "The directors received a lot of criticism about girls' shorts, so they made a rule of not shorter than 3 inches above the top of the knee. I remember this week was hard on the Dean of Girls."

Sandi Heston Rinderer says, "The three girls are all from Greenville. L to R they are:Rose Motzer, Barb Haley and Pam Thompson.

"Kay Wiseman and I were from the era prior to this picture, that had loosened up a little bit and first allowed "shorts" rather than just pedal pushers or long pants. But the only shorts we were allowed had to come down to the knees. Kay and I solved the problem of length with some of our shorts that didn't quite come to the knee, by having her Grandmother sew a couple rows of color coordinated ruffles to our shorts to bring them in line with the knee-length dress code! I wonder if any pictures of those things exist? And, I also remember, that the first thing we did when we got home from camp was rip the ruffles off! We weren't about to be seen wearing those ruffled shorts around Greenville!"

Junior boys in 1963? HS week in 1964 or 1965?

Another Junior Boys week. Row 1, kneeling, 1:4 Rick Walston 2:11 David Bush 2:13 Mike Bush 2:16 Chuck Northcutt 3:16 Steve Roodhouse 4:1 Tom Ewald 4:2 Janet Elam Ewald 4:7 Sheryl Brazle 4:9 Mary Kinney 4:10 Wanda Bowling 4:11 Dan Bowling 4:14 Melissa Sefton 4:5 Janet Durbin, Brownstown. Notice she and Melissa Sefton had matching outfits on, they were best friends!
Click on the photo for a closer look -- 1:1 Fred Wiseman 1:3 Don Doerr 1:4 Pat Heston 1:5 Bob Kelly1:9 Porter Estes 1:10 J.W. Jordan 1:12 Mike Heston 1:13 Paul Boatman 2:4 Kathy Peebles (end of row two -- the little blond head not quite visible)2:19 is Karen Bush with 2:20 Paula Bush 2:21 Francis Steele. 3:7 Jack Provines 3:11 Dan Clymer 3:12 Tim Callison 3:16 Deb Fritz 3:19 Mike Bush. Quite a jumble at the end of that row but I think the two younger kids with arms over shoulders are Robert and James Kelly.

Dishes, driving, missions and muscle beach

Kitchen duty -- Pat Heston in the far background. Mickey Dildine on left, then Beverly Wagoner, with Paul Camp behind her and Fred Wiseman on the far right.

How about these kids on the car -- need names! And... to where is Janet driving these kids? Did they all come from Brownstown in the same car?

There was often a visiting missionary who taught us something of Christian service and of giving as we donated to the work in chapel. The Missionary here is Don Augustine who was a missionary to Native Americans in the state of Washington.

1?, 2?, 3 K Baldwin, 4?, 5?, 6 K Baldwin

The lake was a source of swimming, fishing, the raft, boating -- 7 acres added in the first few years that turned out to be a fun asset.

BOX HOCKEY

These photos date from the 50's to the 60's and that cute little blonde is from the 90's! Box hockey is a game that has remained a constant in the 50 + years of the camp. The original games where built by Frank Bush and several others (including Evan Lockwood of Bethalto). They were patched and reworked many times over the years and completely new ones where built in 1986 by Gary Monroe (father of the blonde!)

Were you a box hockey champion? Do you have a great box hockey story? How about battle scars from swinging the "sticks"?

Also if you know any of these players let us know!

These two young men are Andy Fritz (in the blue and blue... son of Rob Fritz) and Josh Monroe (son of Deb Fritz Monroe)

Does anyone know who Pop is playing with?

Even the girls got to play!
Lynne Gurley said..Sure looks like Carol Gurley walking with her head down.

A night shot -- many Greenville HS age kids, mid-1960s

Let's treat this all as one row. K. Baldwin, Larry Bolla, Mike Wernle, Pat Heston, Keith Baldwin, ? K Baldwin, Terri Blankenship, Bob Boudouris, Kathy Thacker, ?,Janet Nowlin.

Infared of the Lake

Another registration shot...

Bob Kinney standing just right of the table and his wife Stella at the end of the table with back to us. How many campers can you name?
Sandi says girls left to right are:
Karla Knichel, Kathy Peebles(later from Belleville), Linda Smith and Ruth Blankenship, all from Lansdowne Church, East St. Louis

Some of the faculty at Life Recruit week, maybe '64

E. Porter Estes, Merv Moberly, Seth Wilson and Gene Talbot

Faculty at 1965 HS or LR week

Howard Thomure, Bob Scott, Porter Estes on left; Danny Williams, Rondal Smith ,Dan Clymer on right. Barb Haley looking on.

1964 diswashers

Is that boy Lynn Summers from maybe Wood River? And the first girl is Vicki Wall from Greenville? The girl to the far right is Mickey Dildine from Wood River.

1964 Junior girls? Probably a little earlier...

Cheryl Lamb is dark-haired girl on far side of first table that is in process of eating and the cute kid to her right (photo left) is Lynne Gurley ... who knew her hair was ever that short! 4th person down from Cheryl is Dolly Black, faculty/helper that week. Diagonal from Cheryl, on opposite side of table, girl with white head band and dress is Mary Motzer. At second table Ruth Schrumpf is seen sitting with kids. Cheryl would have been a Junior in maybe 1959 through 1961, so this is a little earlier than we thought.

Some 1965 campers clowning around

It looks like Carla Jordan on the left ... know any others?

1964 Bible Drama

Who do you recognize? ? Fred Wiseman ? ?

1958 Christian Workers week

Deb and I are baffled about this one -- seems like lots of families, so maybe an early Christian Worker's week? I dated this because my Mom is holding a very young Karen Bush and I know when she was born. Remember you can double click on the photo to look at a bigger version.

Let's use the same numbering for row:person and see who we recognize. 1:3 Pop Smith 1:4 Dr. Williams and daughter from Greenville 1:6 Mike Heston (the row is not straight so numbering of those folks in front is tricky here) 1:19 with head down is Mike Bush, 1:20 an unhappy Paula Bush, 2:7 Mary Kinney Boatman 2:12 Marilyn Bush holding baby Karen 3:8 Bob Kinney (back row also jumbled together) 3:22 or so the tall dark guy is Dick Thayer. Help us with the others? Frank Bush says: In that large Family week (or Christian Workers) you will find Luke Perrine; Alice and Daryl Terry, and Bill Stark to name a few. Another reader indicated: behind Mike Bush, older kid with ears sticking out is John Griffin of Collinsville. Boy left of Mike Heston is Ronnie Lamb and on Ronnie's left is Harold "Doc" Williams holding his daughter Julia Beth. All from Greenville. Still another: Is that Bill Griffin on the back row left, beside tall man with hat? And his wife Harriet is standing behind John Griffin.(to the left and behind of Mike and Paula) The little girl in front of Harriet is her daughter. I don't remember the little girls real name, but everyone always called her "Pete".

The dining hall has certainly improved since those days!

Spreading the word...telling your stories

If you have looked at the map on this site you can see that word is getting out slowly to our camp friends across the country and the world. Keep checking in -- we have a lot more pictures that we are posting. And keep telling everyone you can remember from camp about the site so we can connect with as many alumni as possible.

We also hope you will tell your own camp stories. There are three ways to do this. You can comment on any post and tell us your own memories there. You can sign the guestbook and tell your story there. Or you can email us with pictures and stories at bondcamp54@gmail.com and we will post them for you. Tell us about yourself now, too -- what you are doing, where you are living, how to contact you -- if you are willing. For many of you, camp was as much a part of your decisions related to your career as was college. It has been so fun to look for people, and find Dr. Rick Walston teaching in a Christian college and John Beck continuing his long service in Christian radio, for example. (Rick and John, tell you own stories when you get a chance.) Many of our fellow campers have moved to other parts of the country, and while not all have chosen Christian service or even to continue in a Christian church, everyone I've talked to has something to say about how those camp years shaped their lives.

So jump in and talk to us. Your old friends are waiting to hear about you.

Paula

Junior boys week 1962

Double click on the picture to make it bigger. We had great fun with this one. Best guesses, so correct us if we are wrong. Row 1: 1 Dave Jackson from Belleville in the first spot. 1:17 Kevin Hayhurst 1:20 Rick Walston 2:8 Scott Cain 2:21 James Kelly 3:17 Gary Thornburg 3:18 John Heston 4:3 John Beck 4:4 Evan Mac Lockwood. I know a lot of the other faces but just can't put a name on them. Faculty row (kindof two rows but in order as one) 1. Merv Moberley 4. George McCarty 5. Bill Price 6. Bob Hayhurst 8. Jack Durbin 9. Bob Kelly 10. Stu Couve (sp). 12. Joe Feher 14. Woody Fisher 15. Charlie Burns 16. Wayne Black 19. Anita Steele 21. Sandy Steele 22. Lynn McFarland. Floyd Jordan, Charles Wogman, Bill Price and Gilbert & Betty Schreiber are also in faculty row.

"In step" from Frank circa 1962

"I'm enclosing a shot I made for promotion. These seven kids are "all in step." Wouldn't it be interesting to have the same seven line up for a "then" and "now" shot? This was taken in 1962. Most of these color ones are from slides. A real "treasure cove" of pictures would be those slide shows that Bob Kinney used to take around to churches . . . before we started taking movies. I wonder if they are still around and who has them." - Frank Bush
If anyone has the answer -- we know how to turn them into posts here.
The seven kids are 1) ? 2) Bob Cargill (?) 3)Dolly Black 4) Danny Diamond (?) 5) Kay Wiseman 6) Woody Fisher 7) June Huck

High school in late 1960s

Cindy Rasler is on the end of the next to the back row in the red jacket. Frank says Tom Van Meter is in the pic, too. Scott Cain in blue and Janet Boyle in yellow in the row in front of Cindy. Gary Thornburg in the yellow behind her. Carla Sexton is in front of Cindy Rasler and next to Jan Boyle. Some discussion on whether the guy in the red shirt in front row is Rick Walston. Double click the picture for an enlarged version to see the faces better.

Maybe a Junior Boy's week? Circa 1962?

Frank Bush reports, "These boys are learning to whistle. E. Porter Estes and Dick Thayer are in the background on the right." Can anyone identify a camper? The one in the white shirt and glasses looks like my brother Mike Bush. Maybe the one to the left is Steve Roodhouse?

1959 campers

Ron Holzhauer is the jumper. Charlie Greer is at left. Any other I.D.s? Sandy Heston Rinderer indicated, "In the pix with Ron Holzhauer jumping.....boy on the right holding the volleyball is Mike Burris. I think the dark-haired girl in background to Ron's left is Charlotte Schroeder. Blond girl sitting on ground is Sandy Schrumpf from Greenville. "

Now Charlotte Schroeder I know. What a fashion statement!

Another fun pic from 1959

Help us identify these campers? See comment -- Guy to the left of key person is identified as Dan Diamond. According to Sandi Heston Rinderer, the girl with the ribbons on her head is Kay Fries from Wood River. And the guy with his back to us on the right -- is that a Holzhauer maybe?
