1958 Color -- fall gathering, annual meeting

This fall gathering (I'm not sure of the occasion) happened in 1958. You can see Tom Ewald, Wilson and Fred Wiseman and Dick Thayer. Seth Wilson is sitting on the back of a bench. Leann Williams is using the hoop.

Dan Williams 1960

As soon as I saw this picture, Danny's laughter made me smile. Sandi Heston's comment was along the same line. So I thought everyone might enjoy this enlargement. Frank improved the resolution so we've posted this larger one for everyone.

Corn Eating Contest 1960 Jr. Hi Week

In first corn-eating contest picture, the second boy, in dark shirt is Robbie Schreiber and the girl is Cindy Harden. Notice the "H" on her blouse? "Initial blouses" were all the rage then!
In the second picture, notice off to the left, a smiling Dan Williams ( I love that picture, it is the Dan we all remember! I can just hear his laugh!) and to his right, in dark blouse, is Nancy Spratt.
There is a boy way in the back, right, with a white hat and t-shirt on. I think that is Lew Williams.
And there is a darkhaired woman leaning out, looking down the table. I think that is Betty Schreiber, Robbie's mom.

A Tribute to Danny Williams, who passed away April 22
Danny Wiliams passed away at noon today. He had been in the hospital a couple weeks with first appendicitis and then kidney failure. He passed away today. He was (I think) 70 years old. He is survived by his wife Juia and two daughters/sons-in-law and I think one grandchild. It is is the end of an era and he will be missed. He was a uniqe individual, to say the least. And a BCSC Icon! And we had a wonderful time with him at the 1999 Camp Reunion. I look forward to seeing him again at the "glorious reunion" in the presence of our Lord. For those who want to send a note/card the address is: Julia Williams 605 E. Matthews P.O. Box 901 Sesser,IL 62884 (from Sandi Heston Rinderer)

From Mike Heston: I first met Dan at Bond Camp in 1960 and he has remained my best friend ever since. We did many outrageous,
incredible, and mischievous things, some of which are difficult to believe. We were once almost thrown in Jail in Birmingham, Alabama. Later, deploying pseudo titles of Dr. Dan Williams and Dr. J. Michael Heston at the Milligan College booth at the North American Christian Convention, we subsequently found ourselves invited to the dedication of their new library—which we attended. In 1964 we were asked to be the judges for the annual talent rally in Lincoln, Illinois. We finagled it to insure that Gilbert Schreiber’s Fortville, Indiana float (which consisted of a pick-up truck with kids in the back and poster board taped to the door panels with the name of the church scribbled on it) to receive fourth place. Schreiber had not intended to have a float, but on the way to Lincoln the kids decided that they wanted one. Gilbert was humiliated at the thought of having such a sorry entry—a fact he made the error of sharing with Dan and Me. He was dumfounded when he got fourth place. Over the years Dan and I were thrown out of two Bible Colleges, one church camp, the St. Louis Planetarium, and the Fox theater. The summer before Virginia and I were married, we were driving around on the Illinois side of the river, when I mentioned to her that my best friend lived just a few miles from where we were. I asked if she would like to meet him. She said she certainly would. As fate would have it, there was a tent revival going on in a lot next to Danny’s place. We attended and made, I should think, quite a nuisance of ourselves—Dan and I, that is. Comments were made about us by the evangelists and soon four “bouncers” gathered behind us (we were on the back row). Virginia later commented: “I really had to wonder what I was getting myself into after that night.” Above all, Dan was a wonderful friend and very devoted believer. We talked by phone almost every week and I will miss not getting those calls. My secretary would frequently buzz me and say that a Mr: Mark Weaver; Clarence Bazzell; Byron E. Smith; Robert H. Kinney; Fred Bennyhoff; or the chief of police of Birmingham, Alabama, et. al., would like to speak to you. Needless to say, I knew who was on the other end of the line. I’ll miss those calls, and so will my secretary—even though she never met Dan.

Junior Girls 1961
Does anyone have an idea as to why these girls (including Deb and Paula) were climbing around on the benches? It does not take much to excite young girls but... I would expect the faculty to try to settle us down.

What are Dan and Charlie doing here? 1963
Is Danny receiving some kind of "stocking" award? Order of the Garter? The girls are offering more and he has one on his lapel, awarded by Charlie for...anyone know the rest of the story?

High School Week Group Photo, 1962

This is one of the more difficult to identify -- lots of shadows, not quite as good resolution. Mike Bush is between 1:6 and 1:7. Stu Couve is wearing a hat so he's easy on the back row. Might be Kay Wiseman, then Sandi Heston and George McCarthy to the right of the tallest guy in the back (Daryl Bishop). Joe Fehr is between the two pointy hats in the back. The two pointy hats.?.one may be Janet Cothern. One year she wore a hat like that to camp. But can't see her face. Right of the hat girls is John Griffin, then Joe Webb. Right of Stu Couve is Charlie Burns. Dan Williams two left of him. Bill Vandervoort and Gene Talbot about 5 left of Dan. What's with those pointy hats?
Row 1 1:6 Susie Pope, 1:17 Larry Iberg, 1:19 Janet Van Horn, 1:22 Linda Reavis

Raft, Life Recruit Week, 1960

There were several versions of the raft, including one with a tower that was too top heavy to work. At the end of the season the raft was pulled into shore to slow the rusting out of the barrels that support it. Tall boy on raft is Heavy McFarland, short boy is Lewie Williams, I think.

Life Recruit Week, early 1960s?

Estimated year: 1964. #2 could be Kay Wiseman, #3 Sandi Heston, #4 is Larry Hostetler, Melissa Sefton #6, #7 is Janet Durbin.

Next to Larry Zumwalt is Francis Grafford, Judy's mother. I think the woman in front of her is Cathy Opperman's mother, Rudy. Gilbert Schrieber was the minister at Wood River, and the Zumwalt's, Grafford's and Opperman's were all members at W.R.
