1958 Color -- fall gathering, annual meeting

This fall gathering (I'm not sure of the occasion) happened in 1958. You can see Tom Ewald, Wilson and Fred Wiseman and Dick Thayer. Seth Wilson is sitting on the back of a bench. Leann Williams is using the hoop.

High School Week Group Photo, 1962

This is one of the more difficult to identify -- lots of shadows, not quite as good resolution. Mike Bush is between 1:6 and 1:7. Stu Couve is wearing a hat so he's easy on the back row. Might be Kay Wiseman, then Sandi Heston and George McCarthy to the right of the tallest guy in the back (Daryl Bishop). Joe Fehr is between the two pointy hats in the back. The two pointy hats.?.one may be Janet Cothern. One year she wore a hat like that to camp. But can't see her face. Right of the hat girls is John Griffin, then Joe Webb. Right of Stu Couve is Charlie Burns. Dan Williams two left of him. Bill Vandervoort and Gene Talbot about 5 left of Dan. What's with those pointy hats?

Row 1 1:6 Susie Pope, 1:17 Larry Iberg, 1:19 Janet Van Horn, 1:22 Linda Reavis
Row 2 2:1 Susan Rasler, 2:2 Carla Clover,2:5 Mike Jackson, Belleville 2:10 one of the Steele twins. 2:14 Melissa Sefton, 2:15 Dolly Black, 2:16 the other Steele twin, 2:17 Susan Beard, 2:22 Ronnie Volkmar, 2:26 David Talbot just peeking through 2:27 Jeanne Talbot Row 3 3:1 is Karen Morrow, 3:6 Sue Burris, 3:8 Kay Fries, 3:14 Janie Bea Johnson, 3:15 Paula Bush, 3:17 Becky Huck, 3:20 Janie Bea Johnson, 3:20 Ruth Blankenship, 3:22 Jane Day, 3:27 Robbie Schreiber.

Vespers, 1961

Charlie Greer, 3rd row left. The man in the suit is Bill Stark (Probably the speaker). There are several G'ville kids in this shot. I see Fred Wiseman, front row left, send from end. Sorry so difficult to see on this one but couldn't resist that little tree in the ailse that we all walked around for so many years.
Another reader identified the following: Left of center: Back row l -r Bob Kinney, Mike Heston, Bill Vandervoort. Right of center: Row 2 3rd girl from right end is Judy Feher Row 3 Two girls on right end are Kathy Peterson and Linda Reavis Row 5 on left hand is Alice Schroeder Back row tall guy left end Jim Correll.
Frank Bush remembers, "It is funny that you should mention that little tree. Back in 1955, we didn't have seats (the audience sat on the grass . . . higher up the hill.) We had a speaker (last name was Steadman) who preached standing next to that tree. All week long he kept stumbling over it (it was very small) and at one point threatened to yank it up. We debated as to whether we should dig it up, but the majority were like me . . . We didn't want to destroy something unless we had to."

Some of Wilson Wiseman's photos - 1962

Janet Elam is looking on, sunglasses seated. Alice Schroeder in checks on the close side of the net and her sister Charlotte in checks on the other side. Boy in glasses is Larry Wiseley. Boy on right in white t-shirt is John Griffin

Cook on the right is Gladys Lamb.

This was a week of Music Camp in 1962. 1:8 Melissa Sefton. 2:1 Paul Sidwell; 2:2 Terry O'Dell; 2:3 Judy Ellsworth; 2:4 Janet Cothern 2:7 Mildred Hill Treat the back two rows as one. 3:4 Janie Bea Johnson; 3:6 Gayle Wakefield; 3:7 Janet Van Horn 3:9 Woody Fisher 3:11 Linda Gehrig, 3:14 Larry Cripe is the blond man on the left.
Wilson Wiseman, an elder at Greenville and father to Fred and Kay, was a photographer. At some point he gave the negatives for these photos to Frank Bush, probably to keep them with other camp photographs.

Life Recruit Week, early 1960s?

This picture is earlier, maybe 1962, than the popsicle picture. Middle girl is Sandy Schrumpf; plaid pants girl is Judy Ellsworth.

Estimated year: 1964. #2 could be Kay Wiseman, #3 Sandi Heston, #4 is Larry Hostetler, Melissa Sefton #6, #7 is Janet Durbin.

Now this one is a treasure, huh? The After-hours party was probably a week when Gil Schrieber was dean. Dan Williams and Mike Heston in the forground with Gil eating pizza between them. In the background we have Pop Smith, Stuart Couve, and to the far right JW Jordan. Boy in back with wildly patterned shirt is Larry Zumwalt and older man to his left is his dad, Dean Zumwalt. Young boy to right of Mike Heston is Gil's son, Robbie Schrieber
Next to Larry Zumwalt is Francis Grafford, Judy's mother. I think the woman in front of her is Cathy Opperman's mother, Rudy. Gilbert Schrieber was the minister at Wood River, and the Zumwalt's, Grafford's and Opperman's were all members at W.R.

l-r Ronnie Volkmar, Karla Knichel, Terri O'Dell, Cindy Hardin, ???
Luke Perrine teaching. Frony row, yellow shirt is Wayne Black, red sweatshirt on end of row is George McCarty. 3rd row boy with glasses is Dan Clymer. Boy and Girl on right of that row are Gayle Wakefield and Terry O'Dell.

Wayne Black in yellow, George McCarty in red on right end. Dan Clymer in center with glasses. Dark headed boy way in the back is Tim Callison.
It is possible these are shots of a Life Recruit Week. These came from colored negatives that have had some rough treatment. I guess I should be surprised that all these negatives have survived, not only the years, but three moves. - Frank Bush It isn't that color wasn't available, but Frank took most shots in black and white so they could be used in publicity materials, and so it was easier to develop in the basement darkroom at the parsonage in Greenville.

1964 -- Measuring shorts

Some of us remember school dress codes. And yes, at camp, too. Barb Haley is checking but I'm not sure hers would pass. Frank Bush recalls, "The directors received a lot of criticism about girls' shorts, so they made a rule of not shorter than 3 inches above the top of the knee. I remember this week was hard on the Dean of Girls."

Sandi Heston Rinderer says, "The three girls are all from Greenville. L to R they are:Rose Motzer, Barb Haley and Pam Thompson.

"Kay Wiseman and I were from the era prior to this picture, that had loosened up a little bit and first allowed "shorts" rather than just pedal pushers or long pants. But the only shorts we were allowed had to come down to the knees. Kay and I solved the problem of length with some of our shorts that didn't quite come to the knee, by having her Grandmother sew a couple rows of color coordinated ruffles to our shorts to bring them in line with the knee-length dress code! I wonder if any pictures of those things exist? And, I also remember, that the first thing we did when we got home from camp was rip the ruffles off! We weren't about to be seen wearing those ruffled shorts around Greenville!"

Junior boys in 1963? HS week in 1964 or 1965?

Another Junior Boys week. Row 1, kneeling, 1:4 Rick Walston 2:11 David Bush 2:13 Mike Bush 2:16 Chuck Northcutt 3:16 Steve Roodhouse 4:1 Tom Ewald 4:2 Janet Elam Ewald 4:7 Sheryl Brazle 4:9 Mary Kinney 4:10 Wanda Bowling 4:11 Dan Bowling 4:14 Melissa Sefton 4:5 Janet Durbin, Brownstown. Notice she and Melissa Sefton had matching outfits on, they were best friends!
Click on the photo for a closer look -- 1:1 Fred Wiseman 1:3 Don Doerr 1:4 Pat Heston 1:5 Bob Kelly1:9 Porter Estes 1:10 J.W. Jordan 1:12 Mike Heston 1:13 Paul Boatman 2:4 Kathy Peebles (end of row two -- the little blond head not quite visible)2:19 is Karen Bush with 2:20 Paula Bush 2:21 Francis Steele. 3:7 Jack Provines 3:11 Dan Clymer 3:12 Tim Callison 3:16 Deb Fritz 3:19 Mike Bush. Quite a jumble at the end of that row but I think the two younger kids with arms over shoulders are Robert and James Kelly.

Dishes, driving, missions and muscle beach

Kitchen duty -- Pat Heston in the far background. Mickey Dildine on left, then Beverly Wagoner, with Paul Camp behind her and Fred Wiseman on the far right.

How about these kids on the car -- need names! And... to where is Janet driving these kids? Did they all come from Brownstown in the same car?

There was often a visiting missionary who taught us something of Christian service and of giving as we donated to the work in chapel. The Missionary here is Don Augustine who was a missionary to Native Americans in the state of Washington.

The lake was a source of swimming, fishing, the raft, boating -- 7 acres added in the first few years that turned out to be a fun asset.
