1964 Family Camp, Building Canteen and more

Lynne Gurley commented: The beautiful woman walking out of the kitchen door is my mother, Betty Gurley Beers. The woman closest to my mother is Nina Harrod. The woman 3rd from the left in the photo, facing my mother is Leola Franklin, and her husband Walter is the older man (2nd from the right) talking to the other man. They are all from FCC Bethalto. Lynne also said, "Luella Bregger is the older woman standing in the forefront. She is also from Bethalto. I'm going to ask mom if the children in the photo are my sister and I...it's hard to say for sure...we all had similar haircuts in those days!"
Life Recruit Week, 1964.

The work crew is from Brownstown. Tom Ewald (on the roof) was preaching there about this time. He told Frank Bush recently, "That is Floyd O'Dell far left, Clarence?, and Pop Smith on the right. Floyd Jordan is on the ladder. Those were myBrownstown men and I was there '60 - 65. Danny Bowling and I did the shower in that building...I do remember that. It could have been 61 or 63 but not 62. It does seem now that that building was in use before the last years I was at Brownstown so it was probably 61 or 63. I tend to think 61. Thanks... those were the days."

What a find! The names are included, in the campers' own handwriting. Including David Bush who printed his at age 7. What fun.

Lynne Gurley Meding said...

Well, Gwen, I'll need your help to be sure...but in the first registration picture, the two women talking look like Bette Barton and Pam Folmsbee! It's before our time, but maybe Bethalto worked that week????

These are Tom Ewald's pictures. Middle left, is that Dick Applegate on the left? Then standing Mike Heston and Jay Young in the back with Alice Schroeder seated between them, and Janet Elam on the far right. Guy in sunglasses to left of Mike Heston looks very much like Joe Webb. In the other spectator picture Janet Ewald is sitting on ground. The girl standing talking to Janet is Charlene Hazlett. The girl looking at camera with sunglasses is Janet Van Horn. These girls were from Brownstown where Tom and Janet pastored. Tether ball game looks like John Griffin and Judy Ellsworth.

1958 Christian Workers week

Deb and I are baffled about this one -- seems like lots of families, so maybe an early Christian Worker's week? I dated this because my Mom is holding a very young Karen Bush and I know when she was born. Remember you can double click on the photo to look at a bigger version.

Let's use the same numbering for row:person and see who we recognize. 1:3 Pop Smith 1:4 Dr. Williams and daughter from Greenville 1:6 Mike Heston (the row is not straight so numbering of those folks in front is tricky here) 1:19 with head down is Mike Bush, 1:20 an unhappy Paula Bush, 2:7 Mary Kinney Boatman 2:12 Marilyn Bush holding baby Karen 3:8 Bob Kinney (back row also jumbled together) 3:22 or so the tall dark guy is Dick Thayer. Help us with the others? Frank Bush says: In that large Family week (or Christian Workers) you will find Luke Perrine; Alice and Daryl Terry, and Bill Stark to name a few. Another reader indicated: behind Mike Bush, older kid with ears sticking out is John Griffin of Collinsville. Boy left of Mike Heston is Ronnie Lamb and on Ronnie's left is Harold "Doc" Williams holding his daughter Julia Beth. All from Greenville. Still another: Is that Bill Griffin on the back row left, beside tall man with hat? And his wife Harriet is standing behind John Griffin.(to the left and behind of Mike and Paula) The little girl in front of Harriet is her daughter. I don't remember the little girls real name, but everyone always called her "Pete".

The dining hall has certainly improved since those days!

Life Recruit Week, 1962

I'm just guessing at the year -- I am in the front second from right as a faculty kid, and I only had long hair in 3rd grade so this is approximate. Double click for a closer look. In addition to the two in the next pic below I recognize Sandi Heston, Dolly Black, Kay Wiseman. Pop Smith. - Paula

Lynn McFarland (Greenville), Linda Smith (Landsdowne), Louie Williams (Brownstown), Gayle Wakefield (Cowden), Joe Feher (O'fallon), Rob Schrieber (Wood River), Wayne Black, Paul Sidwell (Brownstown) In Row 6: George McCarty, Dan Clymer (Landsdowne), "Heavy"(Jerry) McFarland(Greenville), Rich Coget, Terry O'Dell (Brownstown)In Row 7: Betty Schrieber, Prof. John Rawls (LCC), Larry Wisely (Brownstown), Woody Fisher (Brownstown), Johnny King (Landsdowne)\ Back row: J.W. Camp Directors in approx 1956

Here are some of the early directors of the camp. Back row L to R; Don Hargrave, Paul Morisson, Max Pope. , Dick Thayer, Bill Griffin, Pop Smith, Bill Schroder. Front row: Dan Diamond, Ralph Elsworth, ???, Frank Bush, Alvin Thompson, and Bob Kinney. Frank Bush recalls that, "My first association with Bond Christian Service Camp was the summer of 1954. At this time it was called Bond County Christian Service Camp and the only buildings on the grounds were a kitchen/dining hall, boys’ and girls’ dorms with three-hole outhouses behind, another outhouse by the kitchen, and a dean’s office building. There was another older building that later was used nurses or missionary quarters. Water was always a problem. Charles Altom and Don Paine, deacons of the Greenville Christian Church, spearheaded the effort to dig a well.

"We began a ministry in Greenville on Palm Sunday of 1955. Soon after beginning my ministry I met with the other preachers of Bond County to plan the summer camp program of 1955. It was during this and other meetings that I began to realize that this camp would never reach its potential the way it was organized. After the 1955 season the preachers met and we discussed opening up the membership of the camp so that more churches could be involved. I had two previous camp experiences – one with the Lake Springfield Christian Assembly whose camp was owned and operated by the West Side Church of Christ in Springfield and the second, Hanging Rock Christian Assembly, owned and operated by area churches. In order to have sufficient funds and campers I felt the camp organization needed to be opened up to the area churches, which in turn would provide campers, funds and workers. In the fall of 1955 we contacted all the area churches and offered them the opportunity to join the camp organization and be equal partners with the churches in Bond County. We got a positive response from many of the churches. "
