1961 sports and spectators

These are Tom Ewald's pictures. Middle left, is that Dick Applegate on the left? Then standing Mike Heston and Jay Young in the back with Alice Schroeder seated between them, and Janet Elam on the far right. Guy in sunglasses to left of Mike Heston looks very much like Joe Webb. In the other spectator picture Janet Ewald is sitting on ground. The girl standing talking to Janet is Charlene Hazlett. The girl looking at camera with sunglasses is Janet Van Horn. These girls were from Brownstown where Tom and Janet pastored. Tether ball game looks like John Griffin and Judy Ellsworth.

Charlie Greer, 3rd row left. The man in the suit is Bill Stark (Probably the speaker). There are several G'ville kids in this shot. I see Fred Wiseman, front row left, send from end. Sorry so difficult to see on this one but couldn't resist that little tree in the ailse that we all walked around for so many years.

Frank Bush remembers, "It is funny that you should mention that little tree. Back in 1955, we didn't have seats (the audience sat on the grass . . . higher up the hill.) We had a speaker (last name was Steadman) who preached standing next to that tree. All week long he kept stumbling over it (it was very small) and at one point threatened to yank it up. We debated as to whether we should dig it up, but the majority were like me . . . We didn't want to destroy something unless we had to."

This 1954 High School group was shot by Wilson Wiseman. This was the year that Frank Bush served as Vesper Speaker. Bushes lived in Catlin at the time. From Frank: "Roger Elliot was the preacher at Herrick. He invited me to preach at a men's meeting in the spring of 1955. It was there that the pulpit committee from Greenville interviewed me."

A Bible Drama and Fire from Heaven

In later years the risk of this particular activity drove it off the stage and out in the open. Why does only one kid look worried? (Just left of Elijah.) Remember you can click on the picture for a larger view.

I think Elijah is Elmer McKean. The two girls directly behind him we believe are Alice Schroeder on the right in white and next to her looks like Mary Kinney.

Speaking of the raft...

On the diving tower we have Alice Schroeder, Janet Elam and Norman Ray. This particular raft model was fun, but unfortunately short-lived because of the stability of the raft.

Wilson Wiseman, an elder at Greenville and father to Fred and Kay, was a photographer. At some point he gave the negatives for these photos to Frank Bush, probably to keep them with other camp photographs.
